Buckwheat Festival host inaugural buckwheat cake eating contest

KINGWOOD, W.Va. - The aroma of buckwheat cakes filled the air all over Kingwood for the 77th Annual Buckwheat Festival Wednesday night.

The inaugural buckwheat cake eating contest was held at the community building where contestants raced the clock to see who could eat a dozen cakes the fastest. Emil Capito, a native of Wheeling, was the winner who ate all twelve cakes in just under a minute setting record to for next year’s contestants to beat.

“This actually the first time I have been around to this area and gotten to really know what buckwheat cakes are, and stuff like that. Like I said this is the first time I’ve ever had a buckwheat cake, but yea I’ll definitely do it again if they have it next year, and I am happy to be hear and see what everything is about,” said Capito.

Kingwood Community Building will be serving up fresh buckwheat cakes all week for those who would like to have some tasty cakes. The festival will wrap up on September 30.
