Stadium cake funds sweet scholarships for students

COLUMBUS, OH (WCMH) - It’s the Ohio Stadium cake, and people lined up to be a part of the annual tradition.

“My husband said we can make a cake that looks like Ohio Stadium. Someone said, 'no you can’t' and the dare was on," said Kim Tucker.

And 28 years later, this cake has moved from a simple challenge to a time-honored tradition at Ohio State.

This year's Ohio Stadium cake was made with 87 cake mixes and more than 100 pounds of powdered sugar, and lots of frosting -- which, even in this weather, was holding up surprisingly well.

“In the 28 years we’ve done it we’ve had wind, rain, snow, sleet, perfect days," Tucker said. "So we just adapt and do it.”

This year’s adaptation was the fan and dry ice.

Kim and her husband's mission is not only to make a cake replicate of Ohio Stadium, they also wanted to give some financial assistance to pay college tuition.

Tucker says this year they distributed nine $1,000 scholarships.

Since the tradition began, they’ve raised nearly $200,000, and it has touched the lives of many students, some who come to say "thank you."

“They were able to talk to us about what this scholarship means to them," said Tucker. She added that while a lot of time and effort goes into this cake, she wouldn’t change anything -- including pictures of NBC4's Jarod Smalley and Audrey Hasson in the cake's miniature press box.
