Conagra Brands Inc. has recalled certain Duncan Hines cake mixes due to salmonella concerns.

The company said a positive finding of salmonella in a retail sample of Duncan Hines Classic White cake mix may be linked to an outbreak being investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.

Five salmonella illnesses are being researched, Conagra said.

Conagra said it hasn’t been definitively concluded the product is linked to the outbreak. In addition to the Classic White mix, three other varieties made during the same period were recalled out of an abundance of caution, the company said.

The company said some people may have consumed the cake mix products raw and not baked.

All of the recalled items have “Best If Used By” dates in March 2019.

Duncan Hines owner Pinnacle Foods was sold to Conagra last month for about $8.2 billion.

Salmonellosis, the infection from salmonella bacteria, causes diarrhea, fever and cramps. Most people recover in a week or less without treatment.
