Buddy Valastro won’t be icing cakes or folding fondant anytime soon. The Cake Boss star was recently involved in a home bowling accident that left nerve and tendon damage in his dominant right hand, and while he’s already undergone two surgeries and will need physical therapy, the road to full recovery will be long.
The freak accident occurred when Valastro tried to reset the pins at his home bowling alley. “I’ve reset it a hundred times,” he told People. “I guess I looked away, and then my hand got pinned. The metal barb pushed right through the middle of my ring finger and my middle finger. I was stuck in a machine.” Thankfully, his sons and brother-in-law were able to free him, but the extensive internal damage was already done.
Now, the master pastry chef fears he won’t ever bake like he did pre-accident again. “I have a thing with my hands. If I get a paper cut on my hand, I’m pissed off. My hands to me are my lifeline of everything I do,” he explained. “And I wonder, ‘Am I ever going to do what I used to be able to do?’”

However, his family and friends have full faith that he’ll get back to doing what he loves. “He will bake again, even if he has to use his left hand,” his wife Lisa Valastro told People. “Trust me.”
Buddy added that if anyone could inspire him to pick up the piping bag, it would be his Buddy vs. Duff Food Network co-star and fellow chef, Duff Goldman. “Duff was one of the first people who reached out when he heard and he’s been so supportive,” Buddy said. “I’m going to need him to force me to get back into it.” When Buddy shared the news on Instagram, Duff commented, “Get better homie. You’re gonna need that hand 😉.”
At the moment, he’s back home resting and recovering under the care of his family. On Sept. 29, he shared a photo of his wife and four kids, Sofia, 17, Buddy Jr., 16, Marco, 13, and Carlo, 9 surrounding him as he reclined in a lounge chair. “Blessed to have my beautiful family by my side and so grateful for all the love and support from my social media family,” he captioned the post. “My heart is full! Thank you for the outreach and well wishes!”
