"Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro spoke at length Monday about a "terrible accident" at his home bowling alley in which his right hand was impaled by a machine.
Valastro, the star of TLC's "Cake Boss" and owner of Carlo's Bake Shop, appeared on NBC's "Today" show for his first interview since the accident at his Montville home, where he described his sons springing into action to help free him from a part of the machine that trapped his hand, causing damage that eventually required two emergency surgeries.
"It just blew out half of my hand," Valastro told "Today."
Valastro said his right hand, his dominant hand, was stuck in a "fork" in the machine and was then punctured by a blunt metal rod.
"I thought I was going to faint," Valastro said in the interview. "I looked at my hand and there was blood everywhere."
The story continues below the tweet.
Valastro told his sons to get a saw and pliers to get his hand out of the machine. His two sons and and his brother-in-law were able to remove a bolt and free his hand after five minutes, he said, although there was still a metal piece wedged in his hand.
Valastro's teenage son, Buddy Jr., who was also part of the interview, acted quickly even as some members of his family were scared.

"He's my dad. I knew I had to do something," Buddy Jr. said.
Valastro became emotional during the interview when he thought of how his sons helped despite the scary situation.
"I can't imagine that they had to go through this and did what they did," Valastro said.
He did not give a timetable on when he thought he would recover but said it would be an "uphill battle" to get back to baking.
Valastro thanked the first responders and doctors, whom he called "miracle workers," for his emergency treatment.
"It makes me want to fight to get better for them," Valastro said. "It makes me want to be the man that I was."
The original Carlo’s Bake Shop, which is owned by Valastro and served as the setting for the show, is in Hoboken, though the Bergen County native has opened several other satellite locations.
