BW Sweets Bakery’s expanded east Charlotte storefront is now open three doors down from its Milton Road space. Owner Frankie White will also open an express location in South End this fall.
Frankie began baking as a form of therapy while caring for his son, Bradley, as he battled brain cancer. Bradley died in 2011 at age eight, and Frankie opened his first bakery later that year.
“BW stands for Bradley White, so I named the company after him,” says Frankie. Having a terminally ill child and experiencing the emotional and financial toll it can have on a family made Frankie realize the need for affordable custom cakes.
After making cakes for close friends and families in similar situations, the business grew organically.
Frankie says he didn’t want his business to just be a cake shop. He wanted a family of five to be able to walk in and find something that appeals to each person.

Frankie admits that without formal training, there’s been a lot of trial and error. But his efforts have paid off. He even appeared on the Food Network’s “Girl Scout Cookie Championship.”
Frankie takes pride in his business and is motivated by his son’s memory. “To put my son’s name on it every day, it brings me joy and a little more comfort at night.”
