Parades may be called off for Carnival 2021, but we’ll still have king cake. And the Carnival popup King Cake Hub will continue to offer more than 60 varieties of the Carnival specialty in one spot. But that spot has changed for 2021.
Will Samuels, owner of the King Cake Hub, has announced the retail king cake shop will be in a new location for the upcoming Carnival season. It will remain in Mid-City, but will pop up in The Broad Theater, 636 N. Broad St., instead of the Mystere Mansion on Canal Street by the cemeteries.
“The Mystere Mansion has been a great host to us during the last couple of years,” Samuels said. Scheduling conflicts during this year’s Carnival season, however, sent him seeking a new venue, he said.
When he heard The Broad announced a temporary closing, he reached out. From Jan. 6 through Lundi Gras on Feb. 15, The Broad will host the King Cake Hub for 2021.
The site has plenty of parking and a large retail area, Samuels noted. Plus they are planning a programming partnership with new outdoor theater, The Broadside. “We are confident it will be perfect fit,” Samuels said.
Some other changes were made with coronavirus safety in mind. With the new reality under which Carnival 2021 will be celebrated, King Cake Hub’s “Quarnival” aims to enable the ease of reveling in place through expanded same-day pickup options as well as local delivery via DoorDash.
In addition, King Cake Hub will offer a selection of favorite frozen Mardi Gras foods that can be heated and served at home from local restaurants including Katie’s, Francesca’s and Gabrielle’s.
The third season of the King Cake Hub will include additional bakery partners and new king cake offerings.
“I was about to finalize our king cake menu for the printer when I received an email from Brennan’s restaurant saying they were starting to sell king cakes for the first time in their 75-year history and asking if we were interested in carrying them,” Samuels said. “It was a ‘Stop the Presses!’ moment.”
The beloved French Quarter institution will offer a traditional king cake, a chocolate Black & Gold cake and a Strawberry Cream Cheese King Cake. In addition to Brennan’s, Breads on Oak and Gracious Bakery will join King Cake Hub’s elite group of bakery partners for 2021.
NOCCA has partnered with Steve Himelfarb of the now-shuttered Cake Café to offer the bakery’s popular Goat Cheese and Apple King Cake as well as a brand-new Café-au-Lait King Cake filled with cream cheese and three kinds of New Orleans’ own French Truck coffee.
King Cake Hub’s new 24/7 online TV channel MardiGrasTV.com presents a rotating variety of new and classic New Orleans programming including live-streamed concerts, entertainment shows, cooking, sports and exercise, comedy, history, education and the arts. Throughout Carnival the channel will present videos of classic Mardi Gras parades and events on their respective parading days.
King Cake Hub will be open daily from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. from Kings Day through Lundi Gras. Pre-ordering for Jan. 6 pickup and beyond is now available on the website. On Jan. 5, from 6 until 10 p.m., the DoorDash portal will be open so that revelers can have king cakes in hand to celebrate the start of the Carnival season.
Following tradition, the King Cake Hub will host a Carnival Kickoff on Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the outdoor Broadside venue, 600 N Broad St. It will feature Benny Grunch and the Bunch, Professor Carl Nivale, Grand Marshal Marty Graw and the cutting of the ceremonial first piece of king cake. Masks will be strictly required for admission to the event and for entry into King Cake Hub.
Details will also be available via King Cake Hub’s social media sites on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube.
