SOUTH EUCLID, Oh -- A Bundt cake, with its fluted design, is a gorgeous dessert for any special occasion, or for just everyday eating.
At its core, any flavor cake can be a Bundt. It is the unique shape that gives it its name -- taken from the Bundt pan, originally created by the Nordic Ware Company in Minnesota in the late 1940s. But the Bundt cake wasn’t a hit until 1966 when a Texas homemaker -- in a stroke of genius -- decided to make her winning entry in the Pillsbury bake-off that year in an old Bundt pan.
The cakes quickly became -- and still are -- a staple at picnics, potlucks and on buffet tables all across the country.
With the holidays right around the corner, many of us are already working on the menu for our own holiday gatherings and searching for a dessert guaranteed to ‘wow’ your guests.
Many of us don’t have the time -- or inclination -- to do our baking. But cleveland.com’s Best of Cleveland team has found a solution.
National Bundt Day is held every November 15. To celebrate, we visited one of the Nothing Bundt Cakes locations in Northeast Ohio to sample all of the 10 varieties available -- including a gluten-free option.
The cakes are available in three sizes: the bite-sized Bundtini; individual Bundtlet; or single- or double-layer. full-sized cakes.
Each of the cakes we taste-tested was fresh and moist and had a pleasing texture. Our scores were given based solely on the flavor and how true it was to the name.
Check out our thoughts as we taste-tested each flavor below -- ranked worst to best -- to help you choose the flavor which best suits your taste buds.
No. 10
White Chocolate Raspberry
Menu Description: Scrumptious white chocolate cake swirled with the finest raspberry puree. Fluffy, moist and ever so good.
Our Thoughts: If you are craving big chunks of fresh fruit, bypass this option. But if you are content with raspberry puree swirled throughout, you may have just found your match. There is plenty of fruit flavor, but white chocolate fans will be disappointed because the fruit overpowers any other taste that may be lingering in the cake.
No. 9
Lemon
Menu Description: When life gives you lemons, take cake over lemonade. Each bite of this light and refreshing cake has the smooth, sweet snap of lemon.
Our Thoughts: There is no question about what flavor you are about to enjoy when you open the box. The aroma is reminiscent of sweet lemonade. The cake, itself is dense and the flavor is that of the lemon pound cake your grandmother used to make. Sadly, there is a lingering artificial aftertaste that can detract from the old-fashioned flavor.
No. 8
Strawberries & Cream
Menu Description: Made with strawberry fruit filling and creamy white chocolate, this moist, refreshing cake is sure to please and makes any occasion deliciously sweet.
Our Thoughts: You’ll need to be a strawberry fan to enjoy this cake as it is very strawberry-forward. Like the other fruit-flavored cakes in the line, don’t expect chucks of fruit, only puree, though it was plentiful throughout the entire Bundt. The pinkish tint and the all-too-sweet thick icing will have you thinking of cotton candy.
No. 7
Confetti
Menu Description: Our most celebratory and festive cake yet. The combination of classic birthday cake baked with colorful sprinkles adds bites of fun to every occasion.
Our Thoughts: The menu description is a pretty true representation of what you get when you bite into this cake -- the old-fashioned vanilla cake is sprinkled with just enough confetti to add a dash of color, without being overboard. The confetti also adds a pleasing “crunch” to the moist cake.
No. 6
Classic Vanilla
Menu Description: As classic as it gets. With every sweet bite of this light white confection comes the timeless taste of creamy vanilla.
Our Thoughts: “Classic” is accurate. This vanilla cake is as simple as it gets with its pleasing vanilla flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture. The cream cheese glaze adds just the right amount of sweetness. Sometimes, simple is all you need.
No. 5
Chocolate Chip Cookie Gluten-Free
Menu Description: Everything you love about a homemade chocolate chip cookie baked into a cake! Made with gluten-free* ingredients including real eggs, vanilla and mini chocolate chips. Availability may vary by bakery.
Our Thoughts: If the label didn’t say “gluten-free,” you might never know. More of a cookie texture than cake texture-wise, but it still offers up a perfect ratio of chocolate chips to cake. It is the perfect dessert when hosting a combination of friends and family, some of whom choose or need to avoid gluten.
No. 4
Carrot
Menu Description: The classic carrot cake you love with carrot and pineapple pieces baked throughout. Every bite has the warm, familiar taste of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Our Thoughts: If you love carrot cake, you will not be disappointed with this cake. Plentiful shreds of carrot and plump juicy raisins dot this dense cake. The spicy flavor is strong and lingers in the back of your throat but in a pleasing way. Even non-carrot cake lovers will enjoy this one.
No. 3
Snickerdoodle
Menu Description: Just like the classic cookie, this decadent cake is the perfect blend of cinnamon and sugar. With a light coating of sugar, you can’t go wrong.
Our Thoughts: Cinnamon and sugar unite in this denser than most cakes. The sugar creates a pleasingly crunchy coating that delivers a potent sugar rush. The flavor is very true to the cookie we all love and enjoy.
No. 2
Chocolate Chocolate Chip
Menu Description: This decadent chocolate cake is rich with a home-baked flavor. Sprinkled with chocolate chips throughout, this treat is sure to cure your chocolate cravings.
Our Thoughts: One look at this devil’s food cake filled with mini chocolate chips, and you may wonder if it is overly chocolaty -- as if anything could be. But rest assured the chocolate is rich, yet subtle and satisfying, and the creamy chips melt on your tongue to leave just a hint of bitter chocolate deliciousness. Two words best describe this cake: “Rich.” “Moist.”
No. 1
Red Velvet
Menu Description: This scarlet batter of velvety rich cocoa pays homage to its traditional Southern heritage. Every cake is baked with delicious chocolate chips.
Our Thoughts: Red velvet cake does not always come to mind when thinking of cocoa, but one bite of this cake and it will. The moist, buttery cake offers up a rich cocoa flavor, with a hint of vanilla. Best of all, they didn’t skimp on the bonus chocolate chips scattered throughout. The only downside we could find was that the cake was iced with a standard vanilla frosting, rather than the rich cream cheese one would expect with red velvet, but that is a picky knock on this decadent dessert.
