The French Market Restaurant at Disneyland has two holiday items this year: the returning Haunted Mansion cake and a new Peppermint Hot Chocolate.
Haunted Mansion Cake – $6.99
Purple sponge cake, raspberry mousse, raspberries, and cocoa nibs
The Haunted Mansion cake is covered in neon purple, green, and red frosting. This cake was good, albeit moist to the point of dripping.
The cake itself is also purple.
The vanilla sponge cake is saturated in some kind of sugar syrup, and the frosting melted quickly, becoming velvety and soft.
Usually, the frosting on this kind of cake is a hard buttercream, but this one is a smoother, more enjoyable frosting glaze that melts all over the cake. It’s a delicious combination with a bright pop of fresh raspberries inside the raspberry mousse that surprised us and brought some well-needed acidity to cut through the thick sugary frosting and cake.
Peppermint Hot Chocolate – $4.29
Smooth, rich hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and crushed peppermint
This is just a regular old peppermint hot chocolate. It’s well balanced, in that the peppermint flavor and the chocolate flavor are equally represented in the cup without one taking the lead for the other.
It’s a classic holiday treat that pairs well with standing in the cold, waiting for Fantasmic! or A Christmas Fantasy parade to start. It’s not anything necessarily new or inventive, But it’s still a solid and satisfying offering that you won’t regret.
The holiday season at Disneyland runs from November 11 through January 8.
