Eileen's Cookies looking to clear the air over cookie cake mishap - KSNB Local 4

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Eileen Harman started Eileen's Cookies in her basement right here in Hastings back in 1983.

Eileen's Cookies is trying to clear the air after their Grand Island location denied a cookie cake request supporting law enforcement.

Eileen's Cookies then expanded to the rest of the Tri-Cities and has gone on to franchise in some of the largest cities in the country.

But in their 37-year history, they've never seen a week like this.

"It's been really really difficult for our family, and to be misjudged this way is unreal," Eileen's Cookies Co-Owner Tony Harman said. "We couldn't be further from how we're being portrayed. That's not our family."

This past Saturday a customer went to the Grand Island location and asked for a colossal cookie to be made of the American flag with blue stripes, which is a universal image in support of police and law enforcement.

The employee and supervisor on hand denied the request. That customer then went to social media where the story blew up. Since then, Eileen's Cookies has received severe backlash. Rude comments all the way to death threats filled their voicemails and inboxes over the matter.

"However that's not true," Harman said. "We've done countless designs such as that. Always have and always will. It was an error made by an employee, which led to backlash from people who don't think we support local law enforcement, and that couldn't be further from the truth."

One of those employees has since been fired.

Eileen's Cookies said they have, and always will be, been willing to make any design for their customers, as long as it doesn't contain profanity or obscenities.

"We support every person in our communities, and for years and years they have supported us," Harman added. "We're right there with them. It doesn't matter who you are - we support you, and we are here for you."

They have had their hands in the community since 1983, and have no plans to stop.

"We've done a countless number of fundraisers and have donated cookies, so many cookies, for events and organizations," Harman said. "A lot of those are law enforcement. We've just been heavily involved in the community and we plan to continue that. We love our communities and will keep working with them, and providing them the cookies they love."

They have reached out and apologized to that customer. We tried to get in contact with the customer, but received no response.
