A 19-year-old man used photos of his ex-girlfriend to lure a 26-year-old victim into a robbery that turned deadly in January 2020, according to Cook County prosecutors.
During a bail hearing broadcast Sunday on YouTube, authorities said Keon Rodgers, who faces a first-degree murder charge, set up an online profile using the photos of the mother of his 9-month-old child and used the profile to bait the victim to come to the 6900 block of South Michigan Avenue for a sexual encounter.
Instead, the Jan. 2. shooting left Devondrey E. Cummings, 26, dead. Authorities recovered seven shell casings from the shooting scene.
Judge John F. Lyke Jr. set a $1 million cash bail for Rodgers, who was 18 when he allegedly planned the robbery along with 16- and 17-year-old accomplices who have yet to be apprehended.
A witness recognized one of the three assailants, who met at the mouth of an alley behind Michigan Avenue, where the shooting occurred.
Multiple surveillance cameras captured the suspects’ movements before and after the murder, including their escape on foot.
After Rodgers was identified, authorities searched his Facebook profile, where they found photos of him and one of the accomplices posing with guns on the day of the fatal shooting, prosecutors said.
On one of the accomplices’ Facebook profiles, investigators found all three posing with guns and wearing the same clothing captured on video, prosecutors said. One of the photographed handguns is believed to be the murder weapon.
A search warrant served on the victim’s phone uncovered a social media conversation where he agreed to go to the Michigan Avenue location to meet a woman using the name “Yari T,” authorities said.
Phone records showed that Rodgers’ ex-girlfriend provided him with photos and her email two days before the killing, and that he set up the fake profile.
Following his arrest on Friday, Rodgers allegedly said he was a lookout in the alley, and one of the accomplices fired the shots.
“If this is true, the amount of energy that went into this, to rob somebody and ultimately kill them, is utterly outrageous,” the judge said while ordering Rodgers held. “To lure some unsuspecting victim ... is despicable.”
Rodgers is expected to return to court Monday.
