WAUSAU - The pair behind a buzzy online bakeshop recently purchased a local legacy bakery.
Kathleen Regelman and Hannah Reyes, the owner-operators of online bakery concept Cup & Cake, became the new owners of Kreger’s Bakery & Deli on Nov. 18. The storefront will be called Kreger's Bakery.
The duo said they bought the longtime local staple, near downtown Wausau, after a rise in Cup & Cake's popularity. The Wausau Daily Herald profiled Kathleen and Hannah's story — as military wives and moms-of-seven turned pro bakers — in late June.
“The dream has been to have a storefront,” Regelman said. “An opportunity to buy Kreger’s presented itself.”

Kreger’s, 1506 N. Third St., is next to Loppnow’s Bar and across from a BP gas station on Wausau’s east side. The building is outfitted with powder blue siding and a red brick exterior featuring mural walls painted with donuts and pies.
A longtime Wausau staple, Kreger's rose to local prominence with made-from-scratch baked goods packaged in white paper bags — like cookies, donuts and bread — plus burgers, breakfast sandwiches, soups to-go and sliced deli meats.
Kreger’s, formerly known as Kreger’s Kountry Oven, opened in 1962. The one-stop-shop has been owned by members of the family ever since.
The previous owners are onboarding Regelman and Reyes by teaching the pair bakery recipes and showing them the deli ropes through Christmas Day.
“They’re gonna be a great addition to Wausau — teaching them what we know and handing over what Grandpa built,” Kreger’s family member and bookkeeper Michelle Tabaka said. “We’re very pleased (with Regelman and Reyes).”
Regelman, a 32-year-old mom of three, and Reyes, a 35-year-old mother of four, launched Cup & Cake during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic while their husbands were away from home serving in the U.S. military.
Regelman and Reyes said they fell in love with the idea of merging a legacy bakery with Cup & Cake's own innovative style, combining vintage nostalgia and modern cake trends, while preserving the 59-year-old Kreger's Bakery.
The Cup & Cake creators plan to keep the Kreger's product line for the near future while adding their own company's signature cake items like Bundt and traditional cakes for pickup at the brick-and-mortar location.
Cup & Cake's social media posts illustrate art-like cakes including a s'more cake with chocolate ganache dripping off its top paired with marshmallows sprinkled in graham cracker topping, a chocolate Bundt cake with peanut butter cream painted atop, and a large lemon Bundt cake with cream cheese frosting and ornamented with a dried version of the fruit.
The made-for-Food Network fare is then packaged in brown paper boxes, wrapped in caramel-colored twine, and sealed with a circular sticker in a tonal pink or green color.
“We just want to bring something special to an already special place and we didn’t want to see a legacy bakery go away,” Reyes, a Wausau native, said.
