Ryan Wilson bakes muffins and cupcakes, breads and scones. But where he really shines is cake.
The 14-year-old from Danville makes spectacular crumbly confections. They come topped with outrageous proportions of Reese's and Snickers, sprinkles in hot pink and periwinkle and orange, and sometimes, faces made of fondant.
"Cakes," Wilson said by phone Thursday, "are really cool."
Wilson, who starts at Monte Vista High School in the fall, can crank out one cake in a weekend. Each creation takes about eight hours to make, not including the time required to edit and upload tutorials to his social media pages. Nearly 60,000 people follow Wilson's Instagram, where he regularly posts how-to videos and photos. Some of his YouTube tutorials have garnered more than 200,000 views.
"I do the cleaning, too," he notes.

Cake fame has served the teen well. Wilson has appeared on the Food Network's "Kids Baking Championship" and "Sugar Showdown." He hopes to one day have his own show on the cooking channel.
Wilson is "100-percent self-taught." Like a true member of Generation Z, he says he honed his baking skills by watching YouTube videos and cooking TV shows. Now that he knows the basics, he's taken to experimenting.
"I like to try new things all the time," he said, like a recent gravity-defying M&M cake and a four-layer Snickers drip cake.
After the cake is baked and the video uploaded, Wilson slices up his thoughtful creations and shares them with his friends and families. It's a lot of cake, he says, and "sometimes, sadly, I have to toss it."
