
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - The derecho that caused widespread damage across the Midwest in August is among the most expensive natural disasters to happen in the U.S. during 2020.
According to the National Weather Service, the derecho comes in as the third most expensive with $11 billion in damage costs.
The derecho happened on August 10, 2020. According to the National Weather Service, it had a path of 770 miles over a 14-hour period, with winds topping 100 mph.
Iowa and Illinois are among the states most affected by this storm. It caused damage to millions of acres of corn and soybean crops.
During 2020, there were 22 natural disaster events in the U.S. with losses exceeding $1 billion each.
