COSHOCTON − Coshocton Business and Professional Women recently held its annual cake auction at the Frontier Power Community Room. The theme of the 17th annual fundraiser was Weird and Wild.
The event featured cakes baked by locals and sponsored by a variety of individuals and businesses with incentives for purchasing. The auction made $5,063, up from $3,474 last year. There were nearly 60 entries with 17 made by youth, the most ever for that category.
First place for outstanding kids cake was Zoey Alan, who won first prize in the category last year. Most unusual went to Wiley's Finest Wild Alaskan Fish Oil for a giant scarecrow and a pumpkin baked by Kori Hardesty Kaufman. The People's Choice went to Wendy Higley for a cake that looked like the Book of Spells from the movie "Hocus Pocus."
Among notable entries was a cake for dogs only from Good Boy Bakery made by Cathy Fuller. One of the biggest incentives came from '76 Armory Machine Gun Rentals of Columbia Station, with items totaling $850.
All proceeds from the auction will go toward the BPW Working Woman Scholarship Fund. Scholarships of $1,000 each are given out annually in May. Eligible women must be working in their chosen fields for at least a year and be attending a higher level of education institution.
