CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – New franchises are flooding Clarksville, all with their own unique savory or sweet treats. Nothing Bundt Cakes is now joining the surge, bringing a variety of specialty Bundt cakes in differing flavors and sizes to a Wilma Rudolph Boulevard location.
Nothing Bundt Cakes was founded in 1997 by good friends Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz. They began baking in their Las Vegas home kitchens, and since then they have grown to more than 430 bakery locations in over 40 states and Canada. One of the founders came up with the frosting, and the other came up with the cakes, according to franchisee Tien Pham.
Road to Clarksville
Pham has been with the company for over 10 years and said the Clarksville location will be his seventh store. He told Clarksville Now he got started in 2011 when a friend introduced him to the cakes.
“I went to a basketball game with a buddy of mine, and he told me about the brand, knowing that I was sort of an entrepreneur in spirit. As soon as I got home, I looked up the brand and absolutely fell in love with it,” Pham said. “At the time I was a State Farm agent, and I realized that I wasn’t really a State Farm agent, I was just a franchisee for the State Farm brand, so knowing that I really wanted to represent a brand that I completely believed in.”
When Pham went to speak with the founders about becoming a franchisee, he discovered they had something in common: “One of the founders was a State Farm customer representative for an agent.”
Pham currently has four locations in Dallas/Fort Worth and two more in Columbia, South Carolina. He said he enjoys the cakes so much that he is signing on for six more locations, totaling 13 with Clarksville.
Why Clarksville?
“Being from Texas, I wanted to find out what states would mimic the culture, the beliefs, and the values of Texans, and Tennessee jumped right up there,” Pham told Clarksville Now.
Another aspect of Clarksville related to Pham’s early years.
“I am a Vietnamese refugee. My dad was an interpreter for a U.S. colonel. That colonel was the one that sponsored our family to live in America,” he said. “I was born in a U.S. military camp in Vietnam.”
Pham noted the colonel’s name was Charlie Borden, whom he referred to as “Uncle Charlie.” Having formed that special bond, being somewhere with a military presence felt right.
“When I found out Clarksville had a huge military presence, that it was in Tennessee, that there was a university there, and that it was one of the best places to live, it’s hard to say no to that,” he said. “It really is magic. It’s a magical town to me. The people there are really so talented, and the conversations have been extremely sincere.”
Cake time
Clarksville will now be able to try the shop’s many flavors of cake, available in multiple sizes.
“We have nine standard flavors year-round,” Pham said. “The top four flavors would be lemon, which is my favorite; our red velvet is a huge favorite; we have a chocolate-chocolate chip, which is a chocolate cake with chocolate chips in it. Everybody that loves something with fruit in there, they love our white chocolate raspberry cake.”
In addition to the standard flavors, the shop offers a “featured flavor” that rotates every month.
“This month, we’re featuring Oreo as the brand, and basically, cookies and cream Oreo is our featured flavor. And then we have a chocolate chip cookie Bundt cake that is gluten free for those that can’t do wheat products.”
Pham said all flavors are offered in four sizes. Bundtinis, which are mini-bundt cakes, are sold by the dozen.
“It’s actually about two bites, or one huge bite,” Pham said with a chuckle.
The next size is an individual size called a Bundlet. Then there is an 8-inch Bundt cake that serves 10 to 12 people as well as another 10-inch Bundt cake that serves 18 to 20 people.
