A new Costco sweet treat has social media users in a tizzy. A recent video on Instagram featuring a churro Bundt cake with dulce de leche icing racked up 1.7 million views, and a Reddit thread with nearly 500 upvotes has people salivating. It’s even been featured on Allrecipes and KTVU.
The churro cake in question is from Bakery Street, a family-owned wholesale bakery based in San Leandro. Bakery Street Vice President Aaron Chua told SFGATE that his parents first started the business in San Francisco 35 years ago, selling almond cookies to mom-and-pop stores in Chinatown. They eventually expanded to include Bundt cakes, cupcakes, bars and breads, and they have been selling their products at Costco stores across the country for 15 to 20 years.
But Bakery Street has never seen a reaction from customers quite like the one to the churro Bundt cake.
“It was definitely quite surprising,” Chua said. “The numbers definitely were beyond what both Costco and us initially projected. … Over the past week or so since all these news articles came out, we’ve had people reach out to us from across the country asking about the item.”
The item debuted at Bay Area Costco stores in May and is currently not available, but Chua said it is expected to return in the next few weeks. It will remain a Bay Area-only specialty for now, but “we’ll see where it goes from there,” Chua said.
The idea for the churro cake came from a combination of Bakery Street experimenting with Latin flavors for Cinco de Mayo and childhood memories for Chua.
“Everyone has kind of guilty pleasures or dessert items that are classic, things you grew up with as a child,” he said. “Churros were one of them when I would go out to fairs and whatnot. I think churro just has always been a great classic flavor for us.”
The 2.5-pound Bundt cake retails for $10.79 and features a drizzle of dulce de leche over the top. As one Reddit user described it, “This one is a certified banger folks — it isn’t just a cinnamon pound cake — it has a very distinct churro flavor, but a moist pound cake consistency.”
Bakery Street also has two new items set to debut at Bay Area Costco stores in the next few weeks: a cookies and cream Bundt cake and a guava mini cake with a vanilla cake base, pink guava filling and pink guava frosting.
The social media buzz over the churro Bundt has led to unprecedented exposure for the bakery, which has been exciting, Chua said.
“It’s definitely different for us,” he said. “We’re a bit more low-key.”
