Prince William turns 41 today and will likely be blowing out birthday candles on a delectable cake.
However, the dessert probably won’t be the same kind that his mother, the late Princess Diana, gave him when he turned 13.
Former Buckingham Palace chef, Darren McGrady, recalled the day when the Prince of Wales became a teenager and Di presented him with a very naughty birthday cake.
The cook told Hello! magazine that in 1995, she gifted William a sugary, icing-covered loaf … shaped like a pair of breasts!
“I came into work that morning and went down to the refrigerator, opened the door and I was just confronted with the biggest pair of boobs I’ve ever seen in my life,” Grady remembered.
“The Princess had ordered a boobs cake for William’s 13th birthday!” he shrieked.
Grady teased that he had no idea Diana would do such a thing and had no knowledge beforehand of her joke.
But the NSFW gateau left the Duke of Cambridge feeling a little dumbfounded.
“The Princess loved embarrassing people in the nicest way, in a fun way, whether it was telling a dirty, risqué joke – which usually got me. William just went bright red,” Grady said.
But his younger brother Prince Harry — who was just 11 years old at the time — loved the pastry and even wanted one of his own.
That hot summer day was also special for William because Diana had surprised him by bringing in supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell.
Grady worked for Diana at her residence at Kensington Palace from 1993 until her death in 1997. He also couldn’t help but happily reminisce about the People’s Princess’ “terrible” cooking skills.
Because he whipped up meals for the royals on a Monday through Friday schedule, he would leave food for her in the refrigerator for the weekends.
He revealed that one of her favorite dishes was stuffed peppers and would often leave cooking instructions for her to heat them up.
“I actually put cling film on with a little sticky note with a number two on it, and that told her to put it in the microwave and press two. That’s just how bad she was at cooking,” he added.
William was born on June 21, 1982, as he is the first child of Diana and the now-King Charles.
At the time of his birth, he was second in line to the British throne.
Since the accession of Charles in September 2022 upon the death of his own mother, Queen Elizabeth, William is now first in the line of succession.
