In May, an Omaha bakery will be forced to move out of a space they've been in for nearly six decades.

Now, the owner says they need help to avoid closing their doors.

The strip mall that The Cake Gallery is located in near 84th and Center was purchased in 2022 by Dakota REIT, a Fargo-based real estate investment company.

The company's head of business development, Mark Richman, spoke with KETV on the phone. He said Westlake ACE Hardware will move in, taking up all of the space north of Mangelsen's. Richman said some of the space there is vacant now.

The Cake Gallery's owner, Ed Otto, said he wished he would've known about the plans earlier. He says he got the final word in November. But Richman said Otto was told more than a year ago.

He outlines his frustrations on this website.

He says the move will be an expensive one because some machinery will need to be replaced. He's raised some money already from donors. But he says he needs to raise about another $200,000 with the help of customers.

The Cake Gallery is selling gift cards that won't be useable until May 1, 2025, but that will have 15% added to the card on top of what's paid.

If the business raises enough funds, they'll move into a new home at Bel Air Plaza northwest of 120th and Center. If not, money raised would be returned.

In the best case, Otto says the store would be closed for three months beginning in May. He said a commercial kitchen will be used to fulfill wedding orders.

Westlake ACE Hardware provided KETV a statement from CEO Joe Jeffries:

“Westlake Ace Hardware has been exploring options to relocate our store at 84th and Center in Omaha for the past two years. Though we have outgrown that location, we want to stay in the neighborhood and continue helping our long-time friends, customers, and neighbors with the legendary service Ace is known for.

"Dakota REIT purchased Westgate Plaza in 2022 and is planning to redevelop the site. The timeline of their revitalization plans works well with our need to relocate our store and provide expanded product selection, additional parking, and a fresh shopping experience.

"At no point during the past several years has Westlake Ace Hardware been involved in any conversation with Dakota REIT regarding other tenants of Westgate Plaza. Our store relocation is a business decision that makes sense for our customers and our company, and it certainly was not a malicious effort to force out a local business.

"Westlake Ace Hardware has long been part of the Omaha community, and we care deeply about what goes on here. We sincerely wish all the best to The Cake Gallery in their relocation efforts and are confident they will continue to thrive well into the future.”
