Decades-old Omaha bakery forced to relocate - WOWT

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Jozef Otto and his wife, Eve, immigrated to Omaha from the Netherlands in 1956. A few years later, they opened a bakery.

Jozef and Eve have passed, but their family still owns the popular bakery. After more than five decades at the same location, though, The Cake Gallery will soon lose its home.

When Westgate Bakery opened years ago, it was more of a European pastries and donuts spot. Now, The Cake Gallery is more about cakes, and signs in the window tell customers that after more than 55 years at its 84th and Hascall Street location, The Cake Gallery lost its lease and has to move.

Dan Ramirez has ordered cakes here for a long time.

“[I’ve ordered here] for probably four decades, maybe as many as give,” Ramirez said. “It’s been a long time. I’m sad to see them move from here.”

Naomi Jamerson is the manager of The Cake Gallery. She says this place is much bigger than it looks, and to move after 57 years in the same spot will be quite the task.

“It is insane, just the equipment along, anything from like the figurines to any of the wedding supplies, it is just crazy,” Jamerson said. “We have 6,000 square feet. It’s going to be quite the undertaking for us to pick up and go.”

The good news? The Cake Gallery will remain. They found a new home at the Bel Air Plaza.

“Obviously there’s not a lot of ready-to-go bakery places that you can just move from one bakery to another,” Jamerson said. “So we have to do some construction and rebuilding there.”

The move and the renovation of the new location will take some time, and in that time, The Cake Gallery will have to close. But Jamerson says The Cake Gallery is known for its wedding cakes, and production of the wedding reception centerpieces will not miss a beat.

“We have a commercial space [where] we’re going to do all of our wedding cakes, so none of our brides and grooms and couples will have to worry about not being able to have it,” Jamerson said. “We will be honoring all of our wedding cakes, current wedding and any that we would be taking from here on out.”

Jamerson said moving from this spot will be emotional, and it’ll be tough for the small family-owned business, but she’s happy The Cake Gallery will survive to bake another day.

“We will survive with the support of the community,” Jamerson said. “We’ll survive.”

The Cake Gallery will close at the end of May. They hope to reopen at their new location in late July. To help with the expense of the relocation and down time, The Cake Gallery is asking it customers to buy “good cards” to pre-purchase cakes for the upcoming year and cash-in the cards when the business gets settled again.
