Mum slammed for 'outrageous' demand that babysitter pay $33 for innocent act: 'She didn't ask first' - Daily Mail

A woman was stunned when her daughter brought home a $33 (€20) bill after eating two slices of leftover birthday cake at her aunt's house.

Jenny*, 38, shared that her 17-year-old daughter, Carly, regularly babysits her cousins (aged seven and nine) for $12.50 an hour on weekends.

The teenager recently ate two slices of a lemon curd cake from two weeks prior while working, and her aunt was 'furious' she dug into the 'expensive' cake without asking.

'I apologised and said I'd have a word with my daughter, but my sister said the cake was custom-made and cost $116AUD (€70) - so we should be compensating her,' Jenny shared on Reddit.

'My sister says I'm being inconsiderate, and that my daughter ate the slices without permission. I feel like she is being petty, and what difference would it have made if all of it got eaten last weekend or at the birthday party?' she asked.

Jenny provided more insight into the situation in her post.

'I'm a single mum to my teenage daughter, Carly. She babysits her cousins on the weekends so that my sister and brother-in-law can go out, usually for about four hours. In exchange, my sister gives her $50 cash in hand.

'We do not make Carly babysit, she volunteers to because she likes having the extra money without a part-time job in fast food or retail, plus the kids love getting to see her. I'm glad that she's getting to learn responsibility. I think it's a win all around.'

But Jenny recently received a phone call from her fuming sister.

'It was my niece's birthday two weeks ago, and there was some leftover birthday cake in their kitchen. It was a fancy lemon curd cake and I remember the kids didn't want to eat it so a lot was left over.

'Whilst she was babysitting, Carly ate two slices. My sister said the cake was custom-made and expensive, and says that we should be compensating her. I honestly thought she couldn't be serious, but she did want me to give her money.

'I mentioned that surely the cake is going bad soon if it isn't already stale - I said this light-heartedly trying to lighten the mood - but made it clear I'M NOT GIVING HER MONEY.'

But her sister refused to budge, and continued to demand $33 for the 'stolen' cake.

Many were shocked by the sister's appalling behaviour - with many pointing out how 'easy' she had it with cheap babysitting.

'The only reason there is leftover cake in the first place is because the sister was completely inconsiderate of what kind of cake a nine-year-old might want for their birthday party,' one said.

'If the cake is that old I would never touch it - just throw it in the bin,' another wrote.

'Did she charge the people at the party for cake? Maybe that's why there's so much left,' one pointed out.

'Your sister is in for a rude awakening on what a babysitter actually costs. Two pieces of cake is nothing,' a mum wrote.

But others blamed Jenny for her 'bad parenting'.

'Pay the damages. She's a minor and you're responsible,' a man wrote.

'Your daughter needs to not help herself to people's things when she's trusted to be left alone while babysitting. She's supposed to be responsible. It's basic manners here,' another added.

'You're the a**hole for allowing your daughter to think it's cool to go through people's fridges and cupboards scrounging for food without permission,' a third said.
