Lily Halabi, winner of Food Network’s “Cake Wars” and owner of Lily’s Cakes, will be the guest speaker Feb. 17 for the Temple Daily Telegram’s 2018 Day for Women luncheon.
The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center, 3303 N. Third St.
Luncheon tickets are $25. General admission is $10. Tickets may be purchased online at tdtnews.com, the Temple Daily Telegram office at 10 S. Third St., and Precious Memories, 1404 S. 31st St. Tickets will be available at the door, but luncheon seating may be limited.
The Day for Women will feature product samples, presentations and fashion expos.
About 50 local vendors will have products on display, each of which will offer a door prize valued at $50. A grand door price provided by Dillard’s will consist of a Michael Kors purse and watch set — a $500 value.
Telegram Advertising Director Lauren Ballard the annual event typically draws a large crowd.
“We usually have over 500 attendees. This year, we expect to have about 300 for lunch,” Ballard said.
In January 2017, Halabi appeared on “Cake Wars,” a competition show that pits four bakers against each other. Her Monopoly-themed cake caught the eye of the judges as Halabi won the competition.
A native Venezuelan, Halabi opened Lily’s Cakes in 2012 at 360 W. Central Texas Expressway in Harker Heights and began serving up made-to-order specialty cakes. Her Temple location at 2102 S. 31st St. opened last July.
Halabi said her story is evidence of the “American dream.”
“It really shows that America is the land of opportunities. It’s all about how hard you work to get those opportunities and how hard you work to keep them,” she said. “There’s opportunity everywhere. You just have to go for it.”
She hopes to inspire attendees to reach for their own dreams.
“When you work hard to achieve your goals, it pays off,” Halabi said. “I want to make sure that people know the sky is the limit when you work hard and you’re honest about your work.”
