PERRY, Ohio (WOIO) - Six cars at a used car dealership in Perry were scorched after a high voltage power line fell on them, the Perry Joint Fire District confirmed.
PJFD said was sent to 3904 North Ridge Rd. at 4:46 p.m. for an alarm of a power line down with multiple cars on fire.
Perry’s Station 1 arrived on the scene first with a short crew of two firefighters at 4:51 p.m. because of a previous EMS call transporting a patient to TriPoint Medical Center, according to PJFD.
The incident commander sized the scene up and saw a power line down, arching and laying across a car that was on fire, PJFD stated.
Firefighters established a safety zone due to the live power line and requested assistance from Painesville City Power and The Illuminating Company, said PFJD.
Station 2 arrived five minutes later with their staffed engine company, and traffic was redirected safely away from the incident, according to PFJD.
PJFD described details of the fire fight as such:
“Secondary size up found that the B line of a 3 phase line system was down arching on the 1st car that was on fire. Due to this being part of a 3 phase high voltage system, command ordered no water to be applied until the high voltage line could be rendered safe. Due to the high winds of the afternoon, many powerline crews were out on other down lines causing a delay in the power company’s response.”
Power company crews got to the scene 5:48 p.m. and rendered the power line safe, according to PJFD.
Crews then used two hose lines to extinguish the flames engulfing the six cars, PJFD said.
The fire was under control by 5:59 p.m. and North Ridge Road was reopened by 7:08 p.m., said PJFD.
PJFD stated confirmed the fire scorched a total of six cars and one power pole.
