It’s the 25th anniversary of the very best Legend Of Zelda game ever made: Ocarina Of Time. This would have been a splendid time for Nintendo to release a full remake of the classic game, but alas, it appears we’ll have to wait a bit longer for that.
Still, we can enjoy the next best thing, this incredible 18-minute video from YouTuber RwanLink. He spent four months and over 600 hours to make this Ocarina of Time video in the style of a Studio Ghibli film. It mainly takes place in Castle Town as you follow Link around as he arrives, spots princess Zelda and encounters various other characters—some more nefarious than others.
The second half of the video switches from animated movie to third-person perspective video game, and I’m left thinking “I really want this game, with these incredible cut-scenes.” Here’s the full video:
This also makes me think about the live-action Zelda movie Nintendo recently announced. I wrote about that recently and argued that it’s a terrible, no-good, very bad, super lousy idea that will almost certainly result in both controversy and mediocrity.
What we need—what fans would really love—is an animated movie like the one teased in this video. Imagine Nintendo teaming up with Studio Ghibli for a feature animated film! Imagine Shigeru Miyamoto and Hayao Miyazaki working together on it!
Studio Ghibli has done a number of adaptations over the years. Howl’s Moving Castle was a novel by Diana Wynne Jones before it became an animated film, for instance. Zelda is the perfect fit.
In any case, let’s give RwanLink a standing ovation for a labor of love well done. This is extraordinarily cool and I want it to be both a movie and a video game. And I’d love that Ocarina remake from Nintendo. As much as I do enjoy the new open-world Zelda games, nothing will compare to the classics with their amazing dungeons and puzzle-solving. And I could go the rest of my life without breakable weapons.
