A MECHANIC has issued a reminder to motorists to have a used car inspection done before committing to buying to avoid bringing home a 'turd'
As more and more people are turning to used cars instead of buying brand-new ones, the amount of people who end up paying for a subpar vehicle is rising.
As Dave from Dave's Auto Center points out in a recent video on the shop's TikTok (@davesautocenter), having a used car inspection done before signing the dotted line can be the most effective way to save thousands.
"Never buy a used car - I don't care who it's from, your neighbor, your best friend, whatever - without having an inspection done at your shop," said Dave.
After a mechanic looks over the electrical systems, battery, brakes, suspension, tires, key engine components, and accessories, they'll compile a digital report on the vehicle.
From that report, a good mechanic would be able to tell you whether or not it's worth buying, or staying far away from.

"There are three things you could get from an inspection," he continued.
"First, I might tell you 'stop, drop and roll away from that turd.' Sometimes we do a used car inspection and, I mean, it's on fire. Get away from it."
He reinforced that while a used car inspection may cost a few hundred dollars, there's some solace to be taken that someone helped a buyer avoid bringing home a money pit.
"If you pay a few hundred dollars for a good used car inspection so you don't waste thousands and thousands of dollars buying a turd, that's money well spent," he said.

On the happier but less likely end of the spectrum, a mechanic might come back with a smile and a thumbs up.
"I might come back and go, 'Oh, my gosh this thing's been well maintained and it's in great shape,' and then you buy the car and feel great about it," he said.
A benefit to a digital report, Dave said, is that it could even be used a negotiation tool at the dealership - as a non-negotiable report would show exactly what needs to be done, and the price may be workable after that.
The comment section was quite mixed, with many commenters suggesting their own advice, or saying that an inspection isn't worth the money.
"The problem is there aren't a lot of shops with your attention to detail and expertise," one user wrote.
Their comment accrued almost 400 likes and five replies, with all of them wishing they could find a shop like Dave's.
Another commenter issued their own advice about buying new cars.
"Never buy from friends and family, it always ends badly," they wrote.
In response to Dave's comment about the report being used to negotiate with a dealership, they said that it likely wouldn't help.

"Unfortunately a dealership would tell you it's already priced in," they wrote.
"But everyone should get this done no matter what."
