For Taylor Swift fans, there’s one really significant holiday in December — and no, I’m not talking about Christmas. The reigning queen of pop’s birthday is December 13. This year she turned 34 and celebrated the occasion with her favorite birthday cake straight from Milk Bar in New York City. As a self-proclaimed Swiftie, I knew I had to try a slice as soon as images of the bakery’s signature rainbow cake started making the rounds on the internet. Spoiler alert: Taylor’s taste in sweets is as keen as her songwriting sensibilities.

Bakers Gonna Bake, Bake, Bake, Bake, Bake …

I was delighted to learn that Milk Bar ships their signature confections all across the country, ensuring that Swifties won’t have to flock to New York City to try Taylor’s favorite cake. It took me about eleven seconds to unbox my Milk Bar Birthday Cake when it arrived on my doorstep, frozen, packed neatly with ice packs. I placed it in the refrigerator to defrost, patiently waiting until it was ready to serve.

Once defrosted, the cake was easy to slice, and because I am ever the skeptic, I cut myself a small piece. It would be only the first of several, because this cake is as delicious as it is decadent. Three layers of Funfetti-inspired vanilla birthday cake are sandwiched between layers of creamy vanilla frosting — all of which are topped with crunchy crumbs and rainbow sprinkles. Never has a cake been more aptly named than Milk Bar’s Birthday Cake, which fully embodies what a birthday cake should be. It’s visually cheerful, perfectly soft, and super sweet. This is the kind of cake that makes you feel excited to have a party, because it’s too good not to share.

Milk Bar was originally founded by James Beard award-winning pastry chef Christina Tosi in 2008, and has been considered a modern East Village institution ever since. In addition to the ever-popular Birthday Cake, Milk Bar’s menu includes Red Velvet Cheesecake Cake, Chocolate Birthday Cake, Cake Truffles, pies, cookies, and gluten-free cakes.

If my experience enjoying Milk Bar’s Birthday Cake is any indication, Taylor Swift had a very happy birthday.
