Consumers who have purchased the Arepas LA Mejor products are urged to check the packaging for specific batch numbers. The recalled products can be identified by the following details:
- The products are packaged in 25-ounce clear plastic bags with the product name, Arepas LA Mejor, prominently displayed on the front.
- The Product UPC Code is 8 37654 78238, the FDA said.
The company said it started the recall after it was discovered that the Arepa de Chocolo contained milk and was distributed in packaging that did not reveal this as an ingredient. The firm has since made corrections to the label. Newsweek reached out to the FDA on Friday for comment.
The notice says that people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. The company adds that there have been no injuries or illnesses reported to date.

Milk allergy should not be confused with lactose intolerance, according to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE). It clarifies that a food allergy happens when your immune system overreacts to a specific food protein. When you eat or drink the food protein, it can trigger an allergic reaction that can be potentially life-threatening.
FARE said: "Food intolerances do not involve the immune system. People who are lactose-intolerant are missing the enzyme lactase. Lactase breaks down lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. As a result, people with lactose intolerance are unable to digest these foods. They may experience symptoms such as nausea, cramps, gas, bloating, and diarrhea. While lactose intolerance can cause great discomfort, it is not life-threatening."
Allergic reactions to cow's milk can include the following symptoms, according to Better Health Channel:
- raised red bumps of skin: hives (urticaria)
- itchy, red, weeping or crusty rash of the skin: dermatitis or eczema.
- swelling of the face.
- wheeze or persistent cough.
- vomiting.
- diarrhea.
You are advised not to consume this product if you have a sensitivity to milk. Anyone with the recalled product is advised either to dispose of it immediately or to return it to the original place of purchase for a full refund.
The company announcement said that, if you have questions or concerns, you can call 561-480-0132 Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time.
Any consumers who experience any symptoms of allergic reactions are advised to seek medical attention immediately.
