While the morning of a wedding is a wonderful and exciting time, there's no doubt that it can be somewhat chaotic and stressful. With so many people rushing around to get ready, there's hardly a moment to spare before the ceremony finally takes place.
Well, for most wedding parties, that is. But not for Kristina Hartley, who found time to make her own wedding cake while getting ready to walk down the aisle. The idea might horrify or amaze others, but the 26-year-old told Newsweek that she finds baking "really calming." So what better way to escape her nerves on the big day?
Hartley, who lives in Southern California, knew all along that she wanted to make her own three-tier wedding cake, as baking has always been a love of hers. She baked two of the tiers the day before, so while she was getting ready for the wedding, she just had to add the frosting and assemble the cake.
"I knew that I wanted to make my own wedding cake as a way to show our guests that I love them and care for them," Hartley said. "Everyone, besides my husband, told me not to bake my own cake, and many people thought I was crazy for doing it.
"I assembled the individual tiers on the wedding morning and finishing frosting shortly before leaving for the ceremony," she went on. "The intention was always for my husband and I to assemble the cake in front of guests, as an entertaining experience, but it was also symbolic of us creating something new together."
Thankfully for the bride, who tied the knot on February 17, the cake didn't delay her getting ready for the ceremony. She was very glad that she went ahead with making it, despite the protestations and "many expectations" from other people.
She did many trial runs in the weeks leading up to her wedding, so she knew exactly what to expect from the process when it came to making her showstopper.
"I knew that no matter how it turned out, it would taste good and our guests would enjoy the experience of assembling it live. Enjoy the process and embrace any imperfections—that is what will make your wedding day the best," Hartley said
Delighted with her creation, she now plans on making the same wedding cake every year to celebrate their anniversary.
How Did TikTok React?
Hartley has enjoyed sharing wedding content on TikTok (@kristinaamandahartley), and of course she couldn't resist showing off her handmade wedding cake. She posted a video on June 6 showing her decorating it after having her hair and makeup done.
The video has astonished many TikTok users, leading to more than 2.4 million views and over 209,100 likes in just days.
"Most of the reaction has been positive, but of course with anything posted on the internet there will always be negativity," Hartley told Newsweek.
"The best advice I received was to accept and embrace all the things that don't turn out as anticipated. I would have loved to finish smoothing over the frosting a final time and adding some flowers. But would have taken too long, as we assembled it live, and honestly I forgot as soon as we ate the first piece of cake anyway."
The viral video has garnered plenty of attention online, and many people praised Hartley for doing something unconventional ahead of her big day. Among the 340 comments on TikTok, one person wrote: "Aw it's like the first thing you build together as a married couple!"
Another person responded: "I made my cake too, but I stacked it the night before! So glad I did it."
Another comment reads: "This is so cute! I love when there are non-traditional things at weddings. Makes it more personal and not just the rehearsed same old thing!"
