Deising’s Bakery in Kingston receives new equipment from John Oliver’s show - The Daily Freeman

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Deising’s Bakery received the new kitchen equipment promised by comedian John Oliver on Thursday, after selling their “John Oliver Bear Cakes” this week as requested on the comedian’s Sunday show on Max, formerly HBO.

The new equipment includes a 36-inch flat-top grill and convection oven, which, according to second-generation bakery owner Eric Deising, will be put to good use. “It’s nice and shiny, nice and brand new,” Deising said. “We’re very appreciative.”

Deising said the equipment will be put to several uses in the bakery’s busy kitchen. “We have very large ovens that bake large amounts of stuff, but many times in the afternoon, if we want to bake something a little more fresh, we’ve got to turn on this large piece of equipment,” Deising said, gesturing to the new convection oven. “This is a nice smaller version, we can bake cookies and keep them nice and hot in the afternoon.” He added that the grill will be used in the kitchen, where he needed more space.

Deising said he has been overwhelmed by the positive response from the community to the bear cakes, whose proceeds will be donated to the People’s Place in the city, which offers a community food pantry, a thrift store along with several community programs.

“This has been a crazy week,” Deising said. “Monday was totally unexpected, we were not prepared, but we got through it. Tuesday we were just playing catch-up, and Wednesday we finally got a good system down.”

According to Deising, as of Friday, the bakery has sold approximately 2,000 of the $8 bear cakes. Deising said he is predicting an over $10,000 donation to the People’s Place.

Deising said he is grateful to John Oliver for the support. “I think it’s been a win-win for everybody,” he said. “Not only, I got new equipment and great exposure, but John Oliver has a lot of new fans here in Ulster County.”

“And on top of that, the People’s Place is going to benefit greatly,” Deising added.

The “John Oliver Bear Cakes” stemmed from an interview done with Deising by News 12 TV channel in Westchester, where Deising mentioned he had wanted to purchase some of the kitchen equipment from the now-shuttered Red Lobster location in the Town of Ulster. John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” had previously won all of the contents of the restaurant at auction, recreating a mini Red Lobster location on set.

During his Sunday show, Oliver mentioned that while the kitchen equipment had already been donated, he would be willing to buy the new equipment for Deising’s bakery, provided they make and sell a cake bear with his face. Oliver promised a note would be taped to the door of the bakery, which Deising found when he arrived at work on Monday.

While the cake bears are expected to be sold until Sunday, Deising said Friday that, in response to John Oliver’s upcoming show on Sunday, the bakery may make more.
