CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- A vandal at a northern Michigan grocery story hoped to send a message about Pride Month.
But his or her actions may have actually sparked a nationwide outpouring of support.
A few days ago, a baker at the Family Fare in Boyne City decorated some grab-and-go cakes with an LGBTQ+ Pride Month theme.
She didn't think anything of it, until someone else did. At the cake decorator's request, we're protecting her identity for this story.
The cake decorator told us she usually posts the cakes she makes on social media.
"I had already posted that pride cake, and people responded positively to it."
A co-worker later pointed out one of the cakes in the cooler had been smashed.
"I felt disheartened, really, like someone was going to say, if you didn't want that to happen, you shouldn't have done it, but that doesn't feel right to me," she said.
The cake decorator told us she felt like the action should be seen by more than just her, so she posted the picture of the smashed cake on social media.
"I don't want it to be a secret because they destroyed it and hid it and wanted it to be a secret," she said.
The post received a lot of attention and caught the eye of Carrie Miller, a Boyne City resident.
It just kind of hurt my heart.
Miller doesn't know the cake decorator, but said when she saw the picture of the smashed cake, she knew she had to do something.
"When I saw that it was something as simple as a cake was being destroyed, I just didn't feel that was right," said Miller. "People should be able to celebrate whatever they want to celebrate. whether it's a pride cake or birthday cake or whatever it is."
So, Miller posted that she would sponsor the purchase of 10 Pride cakes. Now, she said it's gone beyond that number.
"I've heard from people out of state, I've had people as far away as Vermont want to sponsor cakes and have offered to purchase one," said Miller. "It's turned a bad situation into hopefully something more positive."
It's an outpouring of support that the cake decorator said brought her to tears.
"Everybody and anybody can eat this cake. Cake is a celebration. That's why I created it so someone can have something to celebrate with," she said. "I think representation needs to happen even if it's small."
The cake decorator said she's not sure what a store investigation will reveal or lead to.
She said what's most important is people knowing there's someone standing up for them.
