With a video purportedly showing a BJP leader celebrating his birthday in a police station in Ahmedabad going viral on social media, and the Congress attacking the BJP over it, the Ahmedabad police issued a clarification saying that it was to celebrate the “successful organisation” of a blood donation camp.
“There is nothing malafide,” G S Malik, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, said, adding that a “factual report” of the incident has been sought. “Had it been purposefully for celebrating a birthday, ‘Happy Birthday’ would have been written on the cake…it was not,” Malik told The Indian Express.
On Friday, the Gujarat Congress posted a video on X that purportedly showed several police officers in uniform at a police station, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai, singing ‘Happy Birthday’ for BJP leader Himanshu Chauhan before the clip ends with the slogan of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’. Two women and three men, including Chauhan, are seen in plainclothes with three cakes lined on the table.
“Special arrangement by police for the dearest of BJP. Officials acting like they are being paid by Kamalam (BJP’s headquarter in Gandhinagar), have made the police station itself as Kamalam. Special arrangements by Kamalam for celebrating birthdays of BJP workers and leaders. The police stations, running on the tax money, is for law and order or is a Kamalam party hall? The government must answer,” Gujarat Congress said in the post on X.

Denying the allegations, a statement issued on behalf of the Ahmedabad Police Commissionerate through the deputy commissioner of police (control room) on Friday said that a blood donation camp was organised ahead of a Rath Yatra to foster communal harmony on June 23 at the Dariyapur police station during which 670 units of blood were received from locals in the area, police personnel and jawans from Shahibaug’s army cantonment area. Following the event, police officials and others gathered at the ACP F Division office to plan for the upcoming yatra when a local, Nusratjahan Sheikh, brought three cakes to celebrate the success of the blood donation camp, the statement said.
According to a police official, Chauhan too had played a role in organising and mobilising for the blood donation camp. Among those present was popular folk and devotional singer Yogesh Gadhvi, who is also associated with the BJP. Gadhvi allegedly mentioned that it was Chauhan’s birthday, following which one of the cakes was cut for Chauhan, the police statement notes. “The entire programme was in no way organised for a birthday or political or any other reason,” the police statement added.
In 2022, Gadhvi was booked for allegedly using a casteist slur against the Dalit community during a performance at a public event in Bhuj in Kutch where then Gujarat BJP president C R Paatil was also present.
