'Cake' becomes first Pakistani film to premiere at Leicester Square

ISLAMABAD: The much-anticipated family story ‘Cake’ became the first Pakistani film ever to premiere at Leicester Square in London.
Directed by Asim Abbasi (Little Red Roses, Whore), and produced by Syed Zulfikar Bukhari, the film stars former supermodel Aamina Sheikh, London-born Sanam Saeed and Adnan Malik. The trio play siblings who come together at a time of need for their aging parents.
Saeed said: ‘’Cake’ is a simple, almost traditional and relatable story, that highlights family values and intimate relationship dynamics within a family. It is definitely something South Asians (can) relate to, but the genre also appeals to and resonates with anyone despite their race, religion, sex, or culture.”
The premiere drew A-list guests, including Nobel Peace laureate Malala Yousafzai, and fellow Pakistani actors (and L’Oreal ambassador) Mahira Khan and Ainny Jaffri.
“It was an absolute honor and privilege to be part of the first Pakistani film premiering at such a prestigious venue. The entire ‘Cake’ team feels extremely blessed and humbled to have a film like Cake representing Pakistan as the first film released there,” said Saeed.
“It’s Pakistani cinema to the world!” said Adnan Malik. “It was a real proud moment for me and my team to see a Pakistani film given the red carpet treatment in London’s most iconic destination.”
The media spotlight provided a platform for the team behind ‘Cake’ not only showcase this film, but Pakistani stories and the country’s cinema as a whole.
“I think this bodes really well for Pakistani cinema and it has created a real hype here in the United Kingdom. I hope this opens doors for more innovative and inventive films coming out of Pakistan, redefining its narrative.”
