Sir Alex Ferguson's introduction of a Jaffa Cake diet in 1992 transformed Manchester United's fortunes, according to former player Brian McClair.

Arsene Wenger has often been credited with bringing an innovative approach to nutrition when he arrived in the Premier League in 1996, but McClair has lifted the lid on Ferguson's menu changes that really took the biscuit.

The Manchester United manager employed 'nutritional guru' Trevor Lea, whose insistence on introducing Jaffa Cakes brought the sweet taste of victory.

"In '92, SAF brought in Trevor Lea a nutritional guru, his first act was to confiscate the custard creams, bourbons & choc digestives," McClair, who later became United's academy director, said on Twitter.

"He had a Jiffy bag from which he pulled the performance enhancing superfood that was key to Utd's success over the next 16 years!!!"

McClair went on to reveal that players were told to eat five jaffa cakes on training days and three on matchdays ahead of a game.

The change would appear to have paid dividends too, with United going on to win 13 titles under Ferguson - but McClair did not get greedy.

"Not eaten one since 1998," McClair added on Twitter. "I've had my life's quota, still enjoy the odd custard cream with a glass of ribena, full fat of an evening."
