Royal wedding fever hits close to home
For anyone living under a rock (or simply with better things to think about) the royal wedding is mere months away. On May 19, American person Megan Markle will become forever entangled in the British royal family when she weds Prince Harry, the younger and wilder of the two princes. To celebrate, the youthful duo has chosen a cake from London bakery Violet Cakes, owned by baker Claire Ptak, a Californian who got her start in the kitchen of Chez Panisse. The cake will be a lemon elderflower cake covered with buttercream and fresh flowers, which an official announcement says was chosen to “incorporate the bright flavours of spring.”
Get ready for some mudbugs, San Francisco
New Orleans-style Mission restaurant Alba Rays is ready for spring (and ready to party, as always). To celebrate the season, they’ve got a crawfish feast on the menu for $49 per person. It requires a 72-hour advance reservation and a two-guest minimum (the whole table has to participate, too), which provides a bucket of crawfish, grilled oysters, boudin balls, beignets, and all the fixings. There are also plenty of Abita beers and frozen daiquiris on hand to complete the experience.
Proper Foods gets a proper expansion plan
The San Francisco chain that focuses on grab-and-go food is rapidly expanding, with locations in New York City planned to open in September. Proper prepares all its food in a commissary kitchen, delivering to its nine SF locations each morning. No seating and no onsite prep helps keep labor and real estate costs down, a model the founders built with massive expansion in mind. A tenth SF location is currently in the works.
