The Apple Mac Pro is not exactly a cheap device and if you want to buy the wheels and feet separately, don’t expect them to be cheap either. At a time when the coronavirus outbreak is causing havoc and uncertainty with jobs and the economy, Apple thought it was a good time to start selling its up to $700 Mac Pro accessories.
The latest Mac Pro launched in late 2019 and while expensive at the time, a lot has changed since then. With coronavirus sweeping the globe, many have been forced to abide by stay-at-home orders. Although this has resulted in an opportunity to work from home for some, it is also causing serious impact on many industries, and the unemployment numbers in the US have soared in recent weeks.
In spite of this, along with announcing the iPhone SE 2020, Apple is now selling wheels and feet for the Mac Pro, and they are anything but cheap. The Apple Mac Pro Feet Kit (featuring four feet, an installation guide, and a 1/4-inch to 4 mm hex bit) costs a cool $299. Even more expensive is the Apple Mac Pro Wheels Kit, priced at $699 - albeit along with the same guide and hex bit. This makes the wheels even more expensive than the already-expensive price Apple charges when they are purchased with the Mac Pro. Needless to say, plenty on social media have found the timing of this comical, and especially considering the financial situation a lot of people now find themselves having to deal with.
Mac Pro Wheels Vs. Car Wheels
While there are many who have taken to social media platforms, including Twitter, just to highlight the absurdity of the accessory pricing, quite a few are specifically pointing out that the Mac Pro wheels cost as much as actual car wheels, and there's some truth to that. Although you can spend quite a lot on car wheels, at $175 per Mac Pro wheel, it would not be out of place for someone to turn up at their local auto repair shop and be handed a similar bill.
Others have rightfully taken the opportunity to highlight the equally curious timing of Apple selling the wheels and feet at the same time as launching its new smartphone. After all, with a starting price of $399, the new iPhone SE 2020 is only Apple’s cheapest smartphone to date, and that’s only $100 more than the cost of the feet - or two of the four wheels. When you consider you are getting an entire 2020 smartphone, packed with the same processor as the iPhone 11 line, as well as plenty of advanced camera features, it does put the cost of the feet and wheels into perspective.

Of course, for someone who is planning to spend the money Apple is asking for its latest Mac Pro, then the cost of the wheels and feet might not seem all that out of place. For everyone else, it is out of place due to the current climate the world now faces. If nothing else, it may have been wise for Apple to have at least waited for some sense of normality to resume before actively selling what now feels like overpriced Mac Pro swag.
