How expensive is Earth Day - Patch.com

In honor of Earth Day, we are looking at which states spend the most on parks and recreation. There are a total of 8,565 state parks in the United States covering 18 million acres of land. State parks saw 807 million visitors in 2017. The total amount of money spent on state parks in fiscal year 2017 was $6.5 billion, but state parks and recreation spending averages only 0.156 percent of the state budgets.

New York spends the most on parks and recreation followed by California. New York's spending is 448 percent higher than the 50-state average. As of 2017, New York has 215 state parks and historic sites encompassing 350,000 acres. The state spent $713 million in 2017, which equals out to more than $2,000 dollars an acre.

Rhode Island has the least amount of state parks at only 15, but spends three times more on parks and recreation than some larger states, including Montana and Wisconsin, which only spend around $20 million yearly.

Connecticut is one of the first states to close its parks during the COVID-19 pandemic. How will that affect the $54 million the state spends each year?

While many might think Kansas or Iowa have the most farmers, the Dakotas have the largest percent of farmworkers, with over seven percent of both state's employed populations working on farms. North Dakota is ranked first in the nation for canola oil and honey production, as well as spring wheat. South Dakota has over three million acres of different kinds of wheat growing.

On average, California spent $5.7 billion on natural resources in 2017. This is about 300 percent higher than Florida, which spent the second-highest amount at 210percent more than the 50-state average.

Many things are changing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many parks are seeing higher attendance as the weather warms and there is nowhere else to turn. Will spending increase in 2020 or, like in Connecticut, will state parks close due to their high attendance and lack of social distancing measures?
