TROY — Susan Dunckel’s Troylets are backed up.

The Troy confectioner of Sweet Sue’s Copper Pot is adapting to difficult times. She’s taken her own unique spin on today’s current events and wrapped it around in a package that plays with a once unwelcome nickname for the Collar City.

Dunckel has baked a new line of “Troylet” brand vanilla-flavored pound cake with vanilla buttercream and white fondant. Each cake is decorated to look like a roll of toilet paper and wrapped in tissue paper with a “Troylet” brand parody label.

She only just introduced the new line as a tongue-in-cheek response to the hoarding of toilet paper witnessed in scores of grocery stores. The cakes come in a $25 “two-ply” option which serves four, or a $10 “single-ply” option which serves two.

“I’m backed up for two weeks,” Dunckel said, from her River Street Market located in the Hedley Building. She laughed once she realized the pun she stepped into.

Dunckel’s love for the Collar City is evident. She is a Troy resident and this May will celebrate 10 years in business here. She has operated her Sweet Sues Treatery in three locations on lower River Street, on Fifth Avenue and now as part of the River Street Market at 433 River Street. She is also the creator of The Enchanted City steampunk festival, which draws thousands to the city each year.

The Troylet name is admittedly rough on sensitive skin. It was seldom one used by those from the city. The play on the city’s proper name was an abrasive one uttered by those in rival areas to cause butt hurt to members of the proud community; something of which Dunckel is all too aware.

“We can own it,” she said.

“Have you ever seen a picture of Julia Roberts in middle school?” she asked. “She outgrew it and became beautiful and successful. She didn’t throw away those photos. She laughs at them, [and] we need some humor. When the names they called you in high school stop hurting, you know you’ve grown.”

All cakes are produced in a commercial kitchen and handled and packaged with caution to remain safe during the current health crisis. The cakes are available for pickup or delivery only. Free delivery is available within a five-mile radius of the store. Other options may be available for an additional fee.
