LUMBERTON, N.C. — A woman who apparently had been dead for “at least several weeks” was found in a vehicle at a North Carolina used car dealership on Friday, authorities said.
According to a news release on Monday from the Lumberton Police Department, officers responded to the McNeill Used Cars dealership at about 12:01 p.m. EDT.
“Officers arrived and found a female who appeared to be deceased for at least several weeks,” the news release said. “The female appeared to have gone to sleep in the car and never woke up.”
The body was sent to the North Carolina Medical Examiners’ Office in Raleigh, where an autopsy will be performed, WNCN-TV reported.
The woman has not been identified, according to WRAL-TV.
It is unclear how the woman entered the vehicle, and why it took so long for her body to be discovered.
An investigation is ongoing, according to Lumberton police.
