A food company has recalled some of its products because of an undeclared potential allergen in cake products distributed to more than 30 states.
The Banh Ba Xa and "varieties of Banh Pia" were recalled by LQNN Inc. on February 23 because "they may contain undeclared egg." Newsweek has approached LQNN Inc for comment via a voicemail left with its consumer helpline outside of normal business hours. No illnesses have been reported in relation to the recall.
Recalls in the food industry are not uncommon, but are issued when a product may be harmful to a person in some way. This can be due to the wrong ingredients being listed as a product or if consumers are not made aware of potential allergens. In more extreme cases, companies will identify harmful bacteria such as salmonella, which can cause food poisoning and, in more serious cases, hospitalization or even death.
In the cake recall issued via an announcement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, customers were warned to avoid the product. "People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products," the statement read.

A full list of the products, each of the corresponding universal product codes (UPC), lot numbers and pictures of the products can be seen here. The products affected are "packaged in various colors of foil bags," and the best-by date and lot number can be seen printed on the front of the bag.
The products were distributed to: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. Products were also distributed to Canada.
The problem was discovered due to a possible mistake in the manufacturing and packaging process. Each of the products was manufactured by Tan Hue Vien and sold under the brand Saigon Gourmet. Newsweek could not located contact information for Tan Hue Vien.
Consumers who have purchased any of the affected products are urged to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Those with questions may contact the company at (714) 949-7870 from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST.
