There’s something about candles on a cake that makes birthday parties extra special. But if a simple candle doesn’t bring enough fanfare for you, a new trend has emerged that has an especially dramatic flair: “burn away cakes.”
This new innovation has printed images that are lit on fire and burned away to reveal another image underneath. The origins of the trend are unclear, but burn away cakes are catching on like wildfire (pun intended). Thousands of TikToks have popped up featuring inventive burn away cake reveals. From Mean Girls burn book cakes to Pokémon evolutions to inventive gender reveals, the opportunities for burn away cakes are seemingly endless.
Much of the trend’s popularity can be attributed to Canadian baker Namaya Navaratnaranjah, the brains behind the TikTok account @CakesByNams. She was originally inspired by New Year’s burn away cake made by Denise Steward. But Navaratnaranjah took the idea and ran with it, making burn away cakes inspired by viral memes and pop culture moments. She’s racked up over 19 million likes on TikTok and counting.
But as the trend continues to grow and other creators and brands are hopping on the burn away cake wave, the public has a lot of questions. How exactly does this decorating trick work? Is it safe to eat? Is it safe in general?
We caught up with Tony Park, CEO and founder of QB Hospitality. Burn away cakes are just one of the many treats sold at QB’s Angelina Bakery. After drawing inspiration from social media, the Angelina team developed their own version within just a few hours. "We put it on Instagram and it started selling like hotcakes," Park says.
How Do Burn Away Cakes Work?
The designs that adorn burn away cakes are created using edible ink printers. This practice is often used at professional bakeries, but frosting and edible ink aren’t flammable on their own. Instead, sheets of paper made from sugar, rice, and other forms of starch give burn away cakes their dramatic, fire-y flourish.
"There's a lot of labor involved, but it's technically very easy to make as long as you have a sugar printer," Park says.
To create the reveal, cake decorators layer the flammable paper over the frosting-based design. The two layers are separated by a frosting border, which creates a gap and protects the bottom design from the flames.
Are Burn Away Cakes Safe?
There’s always a chance of running into safety risks if you’re working with fire. But when it comes to burn away cakes, the threat level is relatively low.
“You usually already have a candle already,” Park says. “The fire level of the sugar isn’t very big. It’s like the level of a candle or a small sparkler.”
The slow and gentle flames gradually taper off once they reach the frosting border. So even though the effect looks dramatic, the flame is actually pretty weak. In fact, the flammability of burn away cakes are so delicate that they lose their burning power if made too far in advance.
“If you leave the cake in the fridge for more than a day, it won’t set on fire anymore. The sugar paper absorbs too much moisture.”
Where Can I Buy A Burn Away Cake?
Angelina Bakery currently offers a lineup of seasonal burn away cakes, including designs in honor of Lunar New Year and Valentine’s Day. But New York-based shoppers can expect to see many more burn away cakes in the future. “I think there's a lot of applications that hasn't been explored yet," Park says. Aside from other seasonal themes, Angelina Bakery is currently developing a twist that features cotton candy-esque dragon's beard candy on their burn away cakes.
While they sell many of their other baked goods online via Goldbelly, the fragile nature of these cakes means it won’t be available nationwide. If you don’t live near a bakery selling burn away cakes, Cake decoration retailer Ink4Cakes offers custom burn away designs. They even comes with instructions so you can create your own cake at home.
