Card skimming devices were used at multiple Massachusetts Big Y locations in December, the grocery store chain said in a statement.

An unknown person inserted a card skimmer into checkout terminals at the following Big Y locations: St. James Avenue in Springfield, Chicopee (Express), Northampton, Ware, Southbridge, Worcester, Milford, Wilbraham (Express), and Ludlow.

A skimmer was inserted into single terminals at each of the locations between Dec. 19 and 21.

Big Y also said that a skimmer was found to have been inserted at a terminal in the company’s Westfield location at 1 East Silver St.

“The security and privacy of our customers is of utmost importance to us at Big Y. As such, we take our daily security protocols to protect our customers and business very seriously,” the company said in a statement.

Card skimmers are devices used to steal money and personal information from people using credit or debit cards. Skimmers are often installed on ATMs, gas pumps, and checkout terminals in grocery stores. The FBI estimates that skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year. Tips on how to spot and avoid skimmers can be found online.

Big Y said it was investigating the incidents, and is working with law enforcement. All terminals are being continuously inspected.

“If we learn that any particular customer’s information was compromised, we will promptly notify them and provide them with additional information so that they can take steps to protect themselves,” the company said in a statement.

It is unclear how many customers may have been affected in total. A Worcester Police officer told NBC10 Boston that three or four customers were affected at the store there. The customers had their personal information stolen and discovered unauthorized charges on their credit card statements.

Any Big Y customers with questions or concerns can call 1-800-828-2688 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

In December, Roche Bros. said that card skimmers were found at Sudbury Farms in Needham and Sudbury, Brothers Marketplace in Weston, and Roche Bros. locations in Wellesley and Natick.

Police said in November that evidence of card skimmers was found at Market Basket locations in Nashua, N.H., Concord, N.H., Haverhill, Somerville, and Reading. Authorities circulated images of a suspect, who was seen wearing a trench coat, flat cap hat, and surgical mask inside multiple stores.
