'My sister expects me to bake her wedding cake - but I'm not even invited' - The Mirror

A woman who has not been invited along to her half-sister's wedding was left somewhat baffled after learning she was expected to provide the cake - completely free of charge.

The full-time baker, who works alongside studying, regards herself as one of the 'black sheep' of the family - alongside her older brother - and believes things got worse after their mother remarried and welcomed their four half-sisters.

Now her 20-year-old half-sister JoJo is getting married in July, and her family expect her to bake a cake big enough to feed some 200 wedding guests - bearing in mind she herself didn't make the cut. To make matters more difficult, she has deliberately moved a fair distance away from her 'toxic' family, who won't even let her stay in the house, so ensuring the cake gets to the far-off venue in one piece would be no easy feat.

Unfortunately, when the 22-year-old presented her family with a price sheet for her labours, they completely 'flipped out' on her...

Taking to Reddit, the incredulous woman wrote: "My mum and grandma asked that I make them a wedding cake, which I would've happily agreed to if I was invited to the wedding. The thing is, they wanted me to make a cake fit for 200 people, get a hotel near them (They hate that I'm not a Christian, so they think I'll bring evil into their house), work for three days, and get a flight there and back.

"I'd have to pay for all of it, they think it'd be a nice gift to my sister. I just laughed and sent them my price sheet, They. Flipped. Out. I was bombarded with texts from them about how selfish I am, how I am truly vile, how I am toxic for expecting my family to pay for my cake when they could just go [buy] one, etc."

One week after the heated fallout over the price sheet, JoJo herself sent the fed-up baker a message asking why she was charging her when she'd already made her best friend a wedding cake for free. She didn't hold back with her reply. The creative foodie continued: "I simply told her to f off as not only was I invited to her wedding, but I was the maid of honour and in a way, it was a 'returning the favour' for being a genuinely good friend and helping me out when I was going through a lot."

Although her brother Jay and his wife are firmly on her side and say they'd have done exactly the same in her position, the unnamed baker has also had to deal with a fair bit of criticism from those who felt her response was too 'harsh'. With this in mind, she's now reached out to fellow Reddit users for an 'outside perspective'.

One supportive individual commented: "So family should get a free cake but not be invited to a wedding? Make it make sense. Maybe since they're so religious you could send them links to Christian bakers. Therefore the cake would be blessed and not be made from the hands of a 'heathen'."

Another agreed: "Were I in your shoes, I wouldn't even make a cake for these people if they DID pay me for it. If you aren't good enough to stay in their house and aren't good enough to be invited to the wedding then you aren't close enough to be expected to give them a free cake.

"They can't have it both ways; either you're family and are invited to the wedding or you aren't treated as family and don't owe them freebies."
