The line at Salt & Straw ice cream were even longer than usual Thursday night. That’s because they were giving away free slices of ice cream cake to celebrate 13 years of business.
Co-owner, Tyler Malek, along with Salt & Straw staff were speedily slicing and handing out hundreds of free slices through the windows of their NW 23rd and Kearney location.
The giant handmade cake was 6 feet long by 2.5 feet wide and the flavor was inspired by the Birthday Cake & Blackberries ice cream they’ve previously had on the menu.
The cake was made up of yellow cake with rainbow-colored flecks and double fold vanilla ice cream with an Oregon blackberry jam swirl.
The birthday party lasted about two hours and they served around 500 slices of ice cream cake.
Kim and Tyler Malek opened the first Salt & Straw location in 2011 on Northeast Alberta Street. Today, the ice cream shop has locations in five states.
