A bakery in Sydney, Australia, finds itself embroiled in controversy after crafting a birthday cake for a four-year-old Australian boy adorned with symbols associated with the militant group Hamas.
The bakery, Oven Bakery by Fufu, garnered attention for its creation, proudly sharing images of the cake on social media. However, the reaction quickly turned sour, prompting the bakery to delete its online presence amid mounting backlash and an investigation by the Australian Federal Police, reported New York Post.
In the report, NYT stated the cake in question prominently featured the Palestinian flag alongside an image of Abu Ubaida, a spokesperson for Hamas, raising his finger. The young boy, dressed in attire reminiscent of the figure on the cake, mimicked the pose, further amplifying the contentious nature of the celebration. In addition to the cake, cupcakes adorned with the Palestinian flag and the same image of Abu Ubaida circulated online, intensifying criticism.

I wonder what was in the party bags… And the dress code… Were explosive vests optional?

While the bakery initially received positive feedback, with some praising the boy as a “champion,” condemnation soon followed. Religious leaders decried what they saw as the indoctrination of a young child, leading to the closure of the bakery’s social media accounts, wrote NYT.
Robert Gregory, chief executive of the Australian Jewish Group, condemned the bakery’s decision, labeling it as “reprehensible” and a form of child abuse. Premier Chris Minns also weighed in, denouncing the imagery as “horrifying” and asserting that children’s parties should be characterised by innocence and joy, not divisive symbols associated with terrorism.
As NYT shared the post on X, it gained over 1.7 million views and one person wrote, “American kids will have a GI Joe birthday party and it’s not news.” Another user expressed, “Wow. Fantastic. Happy Birthday to the little boy.” A third X user said, “Will they offer AK and grenade themed cupcakes next?” And a fourth user commented, “In America? Wowsers!”
