Performances begin February 12 at New York City Center for the Off-Broadway premiere of Bekah Brunstetter's The Cake, starring Debra Jo Rupp. The Manhattan Theatre Club staging, directed by artistic director Lynne Meadow, follows productions of the play in Los Angeles, The Berkshires, and others.

In The Cake, a North Carolina baker (Rupp) is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs when her late best friend’s daughter asks her to make a cake for her lesbian wedding. Rupp, who is reprising the role of Della from previous productions, is joined Off-Broadway by Marinda Anderson (Teenage Dick, Far From Heaven), Genevieve Angelson (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, The Upside), and Dan Daily (The Rivals, Seabiscuit).
The Cake is playing at New York City Center – Stage I, where it will officially open March 5.
Brunstetter's other plays include Going to a Place Where You Already Are, Cutie and Bear, A Long and Happy Life, Oohrah!, and Be A Good Little Widow. She is a producer on NBC’s This is Us, and has previously written for MTV’s Underemployed, ABC Family’s Switched at Birth, and Starz’s American Gods.
The creative team for The Cake includes John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Tom Broecker (costume design), Philip S. Rosenberg (lighting design), and John Gromada (sound design and original music).
