During Carnival season in Mobile, king cake is ubiquitous at bakeries, grocery stores, parties, offices and kitchen tables everywhere. Think of it as a "coffee cake in drag” – a circular, tubular confection sometimes stuffed with cream cheese and fruit spreads or even chocolate or Nutella, it’s glazed and topped with with purple, green and gold sprinkles. And, of course, it includes a tiny pink plastic baby that’s meant to be inserted into the cake. According to tradition, the one who winds up with the baby is supposed to buy the next king cake.
But there are lots of ways to enjoy the look, smell and taste of a king cake without it being an actual king cake. Check out our list of some takes on king cake that are available around Mobile.
