DON'T let them eat cake! Why the guests at Meghan and Harry's wedding might not get to taste the couple's lemon and ...

  • Fiona Cairns was the baker behind Kate and William's wedding cake in 2011
  • She revealed that guests didn't eat her eight-tier creation on their big day
  • They were presented with a piece of a second cake the following day
  • Meghan and Harry may follow the same procedure with their cake on May 19

It was announced last month that Harry and Meghan had opted for a non-traditional lemon and elderflower cake for their big day which takes place in less than five weeks.

However, guests looking forward to sampling the sponge on the day may be in for a disappointment with a royal baker revealing that it may not be cut on May 19.

Fiona Cairns, the baker behind the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding cake in 2011, has revealed that no-one ate the cake on the day of their nuptials.

Speaking to Town and Country the chef said of her eight-tier fruit cake: 'The actual cake itself, which went on display, was not served at the wedding.'

However, hungry invitees were eventually allowed a taste of the couple's second wedding cake also produced by Cairns.

Over 600 slices of the traditional fruit cake were given to guests for breakfast with a further 4,000 delivered as gifts in commemorative tins.

The eight-tier creation, alongside Kate's Alexander McQueen wedding dress, later went on display at Buckingham Palace - and three tiers were reportedly taken for the christenings of the couple's 'future' children.

It is thought that Meghan and Harry may follow a similar procedure with their own cake. MailOnline has contacted Kensington Palace for a comment.

It was announced last month that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have selected London-based baker Claire Ptak to make their wedding cake.

The Californian baker has been instructed to make trendy lemon and elderflower creation that will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.

The cake will be unveiled at the couple's wedding reception at Frogmore House on May 19 following the ceremony at St George's Chapel in Windsor.

Chef Claire Ptak, originally from San Francisco and the owner of London based Violet Bakery in Hackney, only uses organic ingredients and is said to be Jamie Oliver's 'favourite' cake maker.

She started out on a market stall but has now been chosen to bake the royal wedding cake.

Meghan previously interviewed Claire for her former lifestyle website TheTig.com, which may be why the royal couple have chosen the baker to make their wedding cake.

The former Suits actress even features in the publicity for Miss Ptak’s 2015 The Violet Bakery Cookbook.

The star’s endorsement reads: ‘Pastry chef Claire Ptak has hit the nail on the head with her London bakery serving up delightful treats that have garnered a cult following (in that ever so civilised British way) in the UK and beyond.’

Announcing the news, Claire wrote on her Instagram account: '‘Kinda excited to announce this one! Violet has been chosen to make the wedding cake for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. They both share so many of the same values regarding food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and of course, flavour!’
