Portillo's Bringing Back Lemon Cake For A Limited Time

Portillo’s is bringing its previously discontinued lemon cake back for the second year in a row, the restaurant chain announced Monday.

The cake will be available Tuesday through Sept. 10 at all Portillo’s locations and via the restaurant’s mobile app.

Portillo’s menu had been without the cake for more than a decade until last spring, when a Reddit user offered an open bounty of $300 for the cake’s recipe. The Reddit thread became a sensation, leading Portillo’s to bring the cake back last summer.

The lemon cake is made of two yellow cake layers topped with lemon frosting. Upon its return last year, consumers bought more than 90,000 whole cakes—or 900,000 slices—during the limited run, according to a press release.

Customers throughout the country will also be able to have the cake shipped for $49.99 at Portillo’s website.

This announcement comes just under a week after Portillo's sold slices of its signature chocolate cake for 55 cents in celebration of the chain's 55th anniversary.
