With the One Piece Whole Cake Island arc nearing its end, Chapter 900 proved to be one of the most exciting reads we’ve devoured in a while. Following the release of Chapter 900, One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda announced an off week for the series, leaving fans to wonder what really happened to Sunny and the Straw Hat Pirates after Big Mom finally eats the cake. For those who need a refresher on Chapter 900, we've provided a quick overview of what happened, below. Or, if you’re impatient, you can scroll on down to the spoiler section. Keep in mind: THEY ARE CHAPTER 901 SPOILERS. If you aren’t prepared to have the upcoming chapter’s plot exposed, then just stay back.
One Piece Chapter 900 Recap
Chapter 900 begins as Big Mom starts eating the cake, and boy is she loving it! We see her elation throughout the chapter as story cuts regularly back to Big Mom eating and singing the cake’s praises. She seems particularly impressed by the flavor of the cake and how familiar it seems to her. The chapter shows flashbacks to Sanji as he creates his masterpiece. As soon as Charlotte Perospero realizes the cake hasn’t been poisoned, he sends out a region-wide alert to the citizens of Totto Land, letting them know that the cake has successfully stopped Big Mom’s crazed hunger pangs. He credits Charlotte Pudding for the magnificent creation. As she listens to the people of Totto Land loudly praising her, Pudding appears quite distressed by the mistake.
Back at sea, the Straw Hat Pirates a caught between a rock and a hard place—almost literally. While Jinbe’s crew manages to provide a path for the Straw Hats to escape through, their plans are turned upside down as Oven makes an unexpected appearance. Enrages and Luffy’s defeat of Katakuri, he uses his skill to heat up the waters, causing the Fisherman Pirates to give up the fight. Moments after we cut to a scene of the “Queen Mama Chanter” arriving, only adding to the angst. This pleases Mont d’Or, who proclaims they’ve arrived “just in time.”
Despite the chaos around her, Big Mom continues her ode to the wonderful wedding cake, with its rich, milky flavor. She is suddenly reminded of a birthday party long ago when she last saw Caramel.
The scene moves forward to the Germa that has taken a real beating. We see two mysterious new shadowed characters. The tall thin one carries a big scythe, while the more built character is holding a long sword. The two faces are hidden so you do not know who they are.

The chapter comes to a close as we see a canon opens fire on what appears to be the Sunny. It is unclear who fired the shot or what the damage is to the Sunny. We are left with an image of the Straw Hat Pirates’ flag drifting on the sea -- a perfect cliffhanger for chapter 901.
One Piece 901 Spoilers: What Really Happened To Sunny, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates?
With such a mind-blowing chapter behind us, there’s been plenty of discussion around the web as to what really happened to the Sunny. Is the ship destroyed, as the images seem to suggest, or might something else have happened? How will the Straw Hat Pirates get out of their current jam? Was Chapter 900 the end of the Whole Cake Island arc? Though no official spoilers for Chapter 901 have appeared yet, as soon as those become available, we’ll update this post with links and summaries. In the meantime, here are our favorite predictions and theories about what’s ahead in One Piece Chapter 901. Spoiler #1 Whole Cake Island Arc Isn’t Finished Yet - An interview with One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda in the latest Weekly Shonen Jump magazine may have given us a tiny bit of insight about the current arc. According to Oda, the current arc is “reaching its climax as Luffy and his team battle against four emperors.” The wording of this conversation suggests that while the arc is quite near the end, we’ve still got a few chapters left. One fan on the Oro Jackson website noted a pattern in past arc endings, that seems to indicate the arc will likely be over within 5-10 chapters. If this conclusion is true, it likely means we won’t see the Reverie in the next chapter either.
Spoiler #2:The Mysterious Strangers are Charlotte Snack and another Big Mom pirate.
Spoiler #3: The Sunny wasn’t actually destroyed - The Sunny may well have taken damage during the final moments of Chapter 900, but we think the ship may not be the one we saw go up in flames. Instead, the ship that went down was one of Big Mom’s caught in friendly fire from the Big Mama Chanter due to Big Mom losing control of her homies. There’s a pretty convincing explanation of why this might be true, here. Even if the Sunny has taken damage
Spoiler #4: The Straw Hat Pirates will escape - there are about a million different scenarios in which the Straw Hats might escape, but all of them rely on a little help from some friends. Here are our favorite possible scenarios:
