The new year struck a sour note for dessert fans when TV "Cake Boss" Buddy Valastro closed his Carlo's Bakery locations in Morristown and Ridgewood.
"The leases had come to an end and Carlo's Bakery chose not renew," company spokeswoman Nicole Valdes said.
Valastro is the star of "Cake Boss," a reality show on cable channel TLC and set at Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, which has been run by the Valastro family since 1910.
"Cake Boss" premiered in 2009 and still runs on the cable TV channel TLC. As the show became a hit and the Hoboken shop became a popular tourist stop, Valastro began to open new shops in 2013, starting with Ridgewood.
The chain quickly expanded to more than 20 locations, and his fifth shop was opened in Morristown. Gov. Chris Christie and family attended the ribbon cutting there on March 20, 2014.
Last year, Valastro closed his Westfield location in April and Red Bank shop in August, both times citing a decision not to renew the leases.
"Ridgewood and Morristown will always be famiglia and our loyal Carlo's Bakery guests can continue to get their sweet tooth fix in Hoboken, Wayne and Marlton," Valdes said.
Valastro was an East Hanover resident during his business expansion, but has since moved, Valdes said.
"With many bakeries all over the country, a handful of Italian restaurants, a very busy production company creating really wonderful content right in Jersey City and a very busy online bakery that delivers our signature sweets throughout the continental United States, the brand is making a point to set our sights in 2019 on introducing new culinary concepts and placing a lot of emphasis on our e-commerce program," Valdes said.
